HONG KONG agents are making a play for the 2010 FIFA World Cup dollar, rolling out massive advertising campaigns to push the South African play-offs.
Miramar Travel unveiled packages that take into account customers' team preference, with prices leading in at HK$30,000 (US$3,868) for four- to five-day stays inclusive of one match ticket. It recently sold a seven-day package to a group of four, each paying HK$130,000 to watch three matches.
General manager Alex Lee said soccer became popular after government legalised betting in 2003, helping encourage interest in events such as the World Cup.
Nine Hong Kong agents have been appointed by Emirates to push FIFA packages. The list comprises a mix of corporate, wholesale and retail - Airlink Travel, Farrington American Express Travel, Hong Thai Travel Service, Lotus Tours, Miramar Travel, Nan Hwa (Express) Travel Service, Westminster Travel, Wincastle Travel, and Wing On Travel.
Edwin Lau, Emirates vice president for Greater China, said: "We provide various types of FIFA packages for clients to choose. All the packages include Emirates roundtrip ticket to South African destinations, hotel accommodation, match tickets and transfers."
