Bombings dismay operators
Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-30)

TWO bombing incidents in less than a week apart in Bangkok's city centre may compromise the kingdom's effort to restore confidence, say dismayed Thai operators.

"I am utterly speechless…I never thought this would happen to Thailand," said Sumate Sudasna, president of the Thailand Incentive and Convention Association, which has just launched a Thailand Offers for Business Events stimulus campaign.

Last night's bomb, which injured one, went off opposite the King Power Complex and Pullman Bangkok hotel. The incident came after Sunday's bombing, which killed one and wounded 10 in front of Big C Department Store, opposite the gutted CentralWorld Shopping Complex.

Juthaporn Rerngronasa, deputy governor of marketing for Europe, Africa, Middle East and America of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said it was too early to gauge the impact of the two incidents but admitted there had been some enquiries.

She said the NTO had asked overseas offices to keep monitoring the impact from their respective markets. "But whether there is or will be an impact will depend on whether travel advisories are stepped up."

As of yesterday, 46 countries have maintained their advices, updated since June 30. Of the total, 25 countries post a level-two exercise caution.

Meanwhile, Accor Thailand operations director Paul Stevens said the chain had instructed its hotels in Bangkok to step up security and to be cautious of suspicious bags or packages. He reported a status quo at Pullman Bangkok King Power hotel - no panic among guests.

Pacto nets Audley account
Mimi Hudoyo, Jakarta (2010-07-30)

BARELY a month after winning the Dutch's 333Travel account, Pacto has netted Audley Travel, a high-end tailormade tour operator based in UK.

Audley Travel, which has been sending clients to Indonesia for almost a decade, is currently using Pacific World Indonesia for tours to Eastern Indonesia (beach resort destinations) and Aneka Kartika Tours & Travel for tours to Western Indonesia (overland, special interest).

Pacto director of business development Umberto Cadamuro told TTG e-Daily: "This is another important account for us as the partnership with Audley, which is a big and reputable company in the UK, will give us a strong presence in the UK market.

"As Audley is a high-end tailormade tour operator, it is not the volume that we look at but the quality of the product, the revenue and the allocation of revenue. While Audley also sends clients to Bali, many of their requests are for other parts of Indonesia."

Umberto said Pacto won the bid over nine other operators in Indonesia, including a couple of international brands, through a long process.

He added that with this account, Pacto now has strong presence in all major European markets.

India expects South-east Asia surge
Ollie Quiniquini, Singapore (2010-07-30)

BUOYED by improved air connectivity and publicity generated by the upcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG), India is expecting a seven to 10 per cent growth in arrivals from South-east Asia.

Rajesh Talwar, director of India Tourism's Singapore office, has high hopes for the region, given that even during the recessionary year of 2009 when arrivals to India dipped 3.3 per cent, visitor numbers from South-east Asia grew 4.7 per cent.

"Our tourist season from October to March is approaching and growth should be much better. Visa trends already indicate an increase in arrivals from the region," said Talwar.

India Tourism is pushing the CWG in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei, and has held roadshows to apprise tour operators of the games developments. The latest was a three-city roadshow in June covering Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. "CWG is an opportunity to twin promotions for the games and destinations (to visit while people are in the country)."

Talwar has also noticed greater interest in the country's luxury trains, heritage hotels and mountain destinations such as the Himalayas, aside from the regular cultural appeal. The MICE and wellness segments are just as promising, he said.

Shanghai Airlines quits Star Alliance
Sim Kok Chwee, Singapore (2010-07-30)

SHANGHAI Airlines will leave Star Alliance by end of October 2010 in a move that was highly anticipated after it merged earlier this year with China Eastern Airlines.

Shanghai Airlines joined Star Alliance in December 2007 at the same time that Air China did. Following its latest move, Shanghai Airlines is now expected to join Skyteam together with China Eastern Airlines.

The void it leaves is now expected to be filled by another airline in the Air China group - likely to be Shenzhen Airlines, which gives its parent company a growing foothold in the Pearl River Delta region.

Meanwhile, China Eastern Airlines has reached an agreement with the Yunnan province government to establish a new airline based in Kunming. China Eastern's 65 per cent stake in the as yet unnamed carrier amounts to RMB2.38 billion (US$35m) and its board secretary Luo Zhuping said the new airline would allow China Eastern to grow its share in the Yunnan market, which currently stands at 50 per cent.

Lost World Hotel finds itself in Ipoh
Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-30)

A THEMED hotel, Lost World Hotel, is scheduled to open in Ipoh, Malaysia in 2011, with 134 rooms.

The hotel will cater to theme park visitors to the nearby Lost World of Tambun.

It will be equipped with two function rooms, which can cater to 200 and 300 people in banquet style. This will be in addition to the unique meeting space available at Kepura Cave, which is located within Lost World of Tambun. The 400-million-year-old limestone cave offers half- and one-day meeting packages which can accommodate 100 people in theatre style.

Lost World Hotel will be managed as part of Lost World of Tambun, which is owned by Sunway City Ipoh.

Air traffic rose 12 per cent in June
Singapore (2010-07-30)

INTERNATIONAL passenger demand rose 11.9 per cent in June, compared with June 2008, an increase IATA said was significant considering only a slight improvement in capacity.

Passenger load factors were in the high 79.8 per cent.

"The industry continues to recover faster than expected, but with sharp regional differences. Europe is recovering at half the speed of Asia with passenger growth of 7.8 per cent compared to the 15.5 per cent growth in Asia-Pacific," said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and CEO.

Bisignani added that he expected business confidence to remain high, but that there could be a slowdown in the coming months. This could be a result of government stimulus packages easing off and the completion of restocking.

WORLDHOTELS franchises its name
Raini Hamdi, Singapore (2010-07-29)

WORLDHOTELS will soon be a hotel brand, not just a representation arm of independent hotel members, with the first WORLDHOTEL opening in Frankfurt in September/October and two others to follow in Munich and Hamburg.

Revealing this “new business development plan” of the group, Roland Jegge, WORLDHOTELS vice president Asia-Pacific, told TTG Asia e-Daily the company believed there was a gap in branding in the upscale and upper upscale hotel market which it hoped to fill with its recognised name.

Asked to define a WORLDHOTEL hotel, Jegge said: “It offers a unique proposition to today’s 35 years to 45 years old clientele who do not want cookie-cutter hotels. It will follow our high quality standards, yet it is not standardised. Owners will continue to manage their properties; we provide the whole suite of services – from management advice to training to marketing, etc – and share a percentage of revenue with owners.”

Jegge said there would not be confusion between hotels that opt to just be represented by WORLDHOTELS and a WORLDHOTEL hotel. Currently, there are 450 affiliate properties in 250 destinations. Some may switch to become a WORLDHOTEL, but he believes the business model will open an entirely new market for the company as most of the members already have established their names. “A great hotel such as Khun Wichit’s (Na Ranong) Indigo (in Phuket), for instance, is known to tour operators and customers, but there are other new ones in the region that need a branding,” he said.

He also believes franchising is not a nightmare, provided the company works with good owners and sets high quality standards and strict quality control checks.

Reliance forays into Indonesia
S Puvaneswary, Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-29)

RELIANCE Shipping & Travel Agencies aims to take its franchise business to Indonesia by mid-2011. This will be the company’s first franchise foray out of Malaysia.

Reliance Pacific managing director (travel division), Tan Sin Chong, said the company had chosen to enter the Indonesian market through franchising because of its proximity to Malaysia, which will result in easier management as well as similarity in language, culture and travel needs. There are also presently no competitors in the franchise business.

Reliance Travel is a subsidiary of Reliance Pacific.

Once the Indonesian franchise is successful, contributing 20 to 40 per cent revenue to Reliance, the company may set its sights on Singapore and Hong Kong.

Reliance Travel is the first travel company to introduce travel franchise in Malaysia in 2000. Other local travel companies with franchise businesses are Mayflower Acme Tours and Sri Sutra Travel.

Mimi Hudoyo, Jakarta (2010-07-29)

The 174-unit service residence is targeted to open in April 2012. Facilities include small meeting rooms, a restaurant, a gymnasium and a spa.

Ascott managing director South-east Asia & Australia Alfred Ong, said: "Bali is a world famous resort destination and an increasingly attractive MICE destination...While the majority of our guests are business travellers and expatriates on extended stay, we are seeing an increasing number of leisure travellers at our service residences."

He said operating a condotel in Bali was not meant to create a new market but to cater to Ascott's existing corporate travel market.

In Indonesia, Ascott operates five properties in Jakarta and Surabaya under the Ascott, Somerset and Citadines brands.

Apart from the Citadines Bali Kuta, three other Citadines are under construction in Jakarta and are scheduled to open between this year and 2012.

Travelsphere splits Far East accounts among Thai groundhandlers

Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-28)

THE UK'S Travelsphere Group has transferred one of its three 2011 accounts to the Far East, which had been handled by the Destination Asia Group for almost 20 years, to Asia World Enterprises.

Destination Asia will continue to handle passengers of Travelsphere's Just You and Page and Moy brands in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. These two brands target the younger, more active clients, aged between 25 and 40, who want new experiences and "participatory" travel, according to Destination Asia Group CEO and group managing director James Reed.

Meanwhile, Asia World will handle Travelsphere clients. Reed described the Travelsphere account as more traditional group tours.

Reed declined to reveal the annual arrival figures for the three Travelsphere accounts but expected arrivals in 2011 from the Just You and Page and Moy accounts to be "in the thousands". This, he said, would result in a significant increase in revenue for the Destination Asia Group.

Top association and corporate travel buyers to attend IT&CMA/CTW 2010

Singapore (2010-07-28)

IT&CMA (Incentive Travel & Conventions Meetings Asia) and CTW (Corporate Travel World) have secured a stellar line-up of buyers and delegates to its 2010 shows in Bangkok from October 5 to 7.

The doublebill MICE and corporate travel event has received more than 900 applications from top MICE, corporate travel and association players.

Darren Ng, managing director of TTG Asia Media, which organises IT&CMA and CTW, said: "Our exhibitors tell us that, in addition to wooing the MICE sector, corporate travel and association networks are pivotal for business going forward. Thus, our focus this year is to ensure we deliver more of these delegates to the event."

Ng added that stringent validation measures were in place to heighten the quality of buyers and corporate travel managers at IT&CMA/CTW.

An enhanced programme has helped attract procurement managers, planners and decision-makers of big corporations, including Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett Packard, The Body Shop and Mazda.

The International Congress and Convention Association and the Asian Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus are co-locating their meetings with IT&CMA/CTW. Specially designed accreditation courses will bring in even more association executives.

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau will fund the participation of 57 local travel agents and DMCs at IT&CMA/CTW.

Peace returns to Shanghai

Karen Yue, Shanghai (2010-07-28)

PEACE Hotel, which closed in 1997 for extensive restoration, reopened today under the Fairmont banner and will welcome its first paying guests tomorrow, July 29.

Fairmont Peace Hotel general manager Kamal Naamani, who was general manager of Fairmont Dubai, said the hotel had seen "huge demand and enquiries about space and rooms from groups and transients".

"The uniqueness of the hotel and its history, and the fact that it is now being managed on an international level, have brought in much demand. We are fairly pleased with what we are experiencing so far."

Naamani attributed the healthy demand to the Shanghai World Expo and the city's positioning as a business and tourism destination. He believed Shanghai's positioning would help sustain room demand even after the Expo.

Room rates start from RMB2,300 (US$339) for the opening and will increase over time. Naamani would not reveal target rates, preferring to let market forces take the lead.

Jin Jiang Hotels, which owns the 270-key hotel, pumped HK$500 million (US$64.4 million) into the renovations. Many architectural aspects were maintained or duplicated to retain the original property's charm. For instance, its legendary Peace Hall has been spruced up to weddings and corporate events.

More Indians staying in Malaysian serviced apartments

S Puvaneswary, Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-28)

AGENTS are seeing rising demand for serviced apartments from Indian leisure and business travellers.

Tina Travel & Agencies managing director Adam Kamal said the average size of Indian family groups three years ago was two people hence demand for serviced apartments then was almost nil.

"Now, more Indians are travelling with extended families due to improved connectivity and cheap fares so the average group size has increased to four. Serviced apartments with two bedrooms are more cost-effective compared to booking two rooms in a five-star hotel," he said.

Arokia Das Anthony, managing director of Red Apple Travel & Tours, has likewise seen more Indian business travellers requesting for serviced apartments. "They want the cooking facilities as they are extremely fussy over their meals. (Other facilities) are not important."

New guide to Melbourne MICE

Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-28)

THE MELBOURNE Convention and Visitors Bureau (MCVB) has launched the Melbourne Planner's Guide 2010-2011.

The planner features new and expanded sections on Melbourne's incentive offerings, suggested itineraries and regional Victoria's business events products and services.

Hayley Blumenthal, MCVB director for marketing and communications, said: "(The guide) offers organisers planning a business event with detailed information on more than 100 products and services in the state and information on how MCVB can provide support in securing a business event and boosting delegate numbers."

The guide also includes new information on 'Conferencing in Regional Victoria' and six sample itineraries covering attractions such as the Yarra Valley, Great Ocean Raod, Phillip Island penguin parade, Daylesford spa country and more.

Tumpuan Vacation managing director Zarinah Hashim said the guide cut down research time for quotations to corporate clients. "Many corporate clients want a quotation on the same day so they can present it to their board."

Eric Sinnaya, Morahols Travel managing director, said: "Local corporate companies in Malaysia are beginning to offer incentive travel and don't have big budgets. (The planner) is a good reference point on the facilities in Melbourne and Victoria that suit different budgets and group sizes."

From August 19, low-cost carrier Pacific Blue will raise Perth-Phuket frequency from two to three flights per week. It launched the service on November 14 last year.

From December 20, its sister boutique airline V Australia will increase the Melbourne-Phuket service from one to two flights per week. It inaugurated the flight on December 4 last year.

The frequency of V Australia's twice-weekly Brisbane-Phuket service, launched on November 29 last year, will remain unchanged.

Ollie Quiniquini, reporting for TTGmice (2010-07-27)

MESSE Berlin Singapore is exploring two to three new projects in the region and intends to reveal these within the year.

Executive director Nino Gruettke said: "The way to grow is either come up with a new trade topic, tie up with a local partner in the industry, or export our brand to Asia. We have several more leading shows that we can bring to the region. We will be going for all three strategies in Asia."

As for its core project, ITB Asia, Messe Berlin Singapore is presently in talks with Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre and Marina Bay Sands on the venue for the leisure travel trade show from 2011 onwards, said Gruettke.

This year's ITB Asia will feature an Associations Day, with around 50 hosted association buyers, and a Luxury Meetings Forum. Apart from Wired in Travel, another external conference will be held alongside the show.

ITB Asia 2010 targets 700 hosted buyers and some 6,500 trade visitors during its three-day run, and more exhibitors from last year.

TIC rebuilds Chinese travellers' confidence
Prudence Lui, Hong Kong (2010-07-26)

THE Travel Industry Council (TIC) is taking steps to defuse the negative publicity caused by tour guide malpractice and zero-fare tours that affected mainland Chinese tourists in Hong Kong.

From August 1, the inbound tourist service hotline will be extended till midnight. Subsequently, a 24-hour service may be launched. Currently, tourists can only call for help between 9am and 5pm.

More remedial actions are expected following an emergency meeting on July 22 called by Rita Lau, secretary for commerce and economic development, with TIC board members and legislative councilor Paul Tse. Lau also plans to meet China National Tourism Administration chairman Shao Qiwei in Beijing.

Lau said there was great concern over the industry's practice of receiving mainland group tours for free or even paying a sum to mainland agents to receive groups. However, Lau assured the industry that the government would not interfere with the pricing of tour groups, which is a business decision.

SilkAir increases frequencies to meet 'robust' demand
Singapore (2010-07-26)

SILKAIR will increase flight frequency in its northern winter schedule (October 31, 2010 to March 26, 2011) to meet what it says is "robust" air travel demand to regional destinations.

The year-end peak season will also be well served by supplementary services to meet higher travel demand.

The project is a collaboration between the government and private sector to oversee and assist product development and revitalisation of various tourist destinations.

Directorate-general of tourist destination development secretary Winarno Sudjas told the media the aim was to improve management quality of existing tourist destinations, which will boost arrivals and provide more benefits to the local community.

A national conference will be held in Jakarta next week to discuss and share best practices among all tourism stakeholders in Indonesia and overseas, added Sudjas.

Kyushu wants to close gap
Karen Yue, Singapore (2010-07-26)

KYUSHU Tourism Promotion Organization (KTPO) is stepping up promotion to close a huge gap between Singapore-bound departures from Kyushu and Singaporean arrivals in Kyushu.

Last year, 53,000 Japanese in Kyushu, Japan's third-largest island, visited Singapore, but only 12,000 Singapore arrivals were recorded in Kyushu.

Speaking to TTG Asia eDaily on Friday at its first trade seminar in Singapore, KTPO director, overseas division, Shigeto Moto, said: "The problem is that Kyushu is not well known to Singaporeans. Air access is not a problem - Singapore Airlines has five weekly flights to Fukuoka (Kyushu's commercial stronghold). And we have a very good variety of onsens (hot springs), malls, dining experiences, and nature, historical and cultural attractions - things that Singaporeans like. We even have ski resorts, just like in Hokkaido!"

He added that the island's express train network made it convenient for travellers to visit all seven cities in Kyushu, while the completion of the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train rail next March would shorten travel time between Fukuoka and Kagoshima to just over an hour from the current three.

With improved overland transportation and stronger marketing efforts, Moto is confident of growing Singapore arrivals to 20,000 by end-2010.

Accor and InterGlobe establish fund to grow Indian portfolio
Paris (2010-07-23)

ACCOR and Interglobe Enterprises have strengthened their partnership with a new investment fund that focuses on a portfolio of Indian hotel assets. Both companies will hold 32 per cent equity in the fund.

The fund will initially hold the assets for seven Indian hotels currently jointly owned by Accor and InterGlobe. These hotels, located in key gateway Indian cities, will open between 2011 and 2013.

A significant stake will be held by Pacifica Partners, the asset manager for the joint-venture hotel investment company established between an affiliate of GIC Real Estate, the real estate arm of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, and Host Hotels and Resorts, a New York Stock Exchange-listed company.

New 2010 arrivals target for Thailand
Bangkok (2010-07-23)

THE Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has once again revised its 2010 arrival target – this time to 14.5 million visitors, down from the initial 1.5.5 million target set in end-2009 before the April riots kicked in.

Encouraged by a 13.7 per cent year-on-year growth in arrivals in the first half of the year, TAT governor Suraphon Svetasreni said a range of market recovery efforts by Thai private and public tourism sectors should boost numbers in the second half of the year.

Suraphon said Asian economies had shown steady improvements, shorthaul markets had demonstrated great promise, airlines had added flights to Thailand from key regional markets, and many countries had relaxed or withdrawn their travel advisories on Thailand.

The kingdom attracted 7.5 million visitors between January and June. East Asian markets topped the list with 3.67 million visitors, up 12.9 per cent, followed by European markets with 2.27 million visitors, up 15.9 per cent.

There were 431,381 visitors from the Americas (up 3.6 per cent), and 446,935 from South Asia (up 16 per cent). Oceania arrivals increased by 11.9 per cent to 367,540, Middle East arrivals surged 22.2 per cent to 261,657 and African arrivals increased by 21.7 per cent to 56,908.

Karen Yue, Singapore (2010-07-23)

LIMITED air access to Macau presents a tourism challenge that will be eradicated with  the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge in 2016 and improved ferry services.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge is a proposed 50km link that will connect the west side of Hong Kong to Macau and Zhuhai in China.

TurboJet offers a VIP ferry service that ensures a seamless transfer from Hong Kong International Airport to Macau. Travellers will be received at the aerobridge at the airport and brought to the ferry terminal.

TurboJet's team will take care of travellers' luggage. Passengers, who will be seated in Super Class cabins, will be received by greeters at the ferry terminal in Macau and  brought to their hotels.

Macau Government Tourist Office head of Macau Business Tourism Centre, Licenio Cunha, said: “It's difficult to convince a first-timer to fly to Hong Kong and take a boat. But once the traveller experiences it, he will know how convenient the ferry access is.”

Macau has been losing out to Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong, which offer excellent direct air access from many points in the world.

To attract more foreign shoppers to the country during the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (MMSC) from July 24 to September 16, Tourism Malaysia overseas offices have distributed Tourist Privilege Cards from leading malls such as Sunway Pyramid and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. These cards provide discounts on selected purchases.

Now in its 11th year, MMSC is designed to target high-yield Middle East tourists as well as those on summer holidays from countries in the northern hemisphere.

Tourism minister Dr Ng Yen Yen said: “As shopping marks a major component of tourism revenue, focus is being placed on identifying more goods to be listed under duty free and promoting the Bukit Bintang /Kuala Lumpur City Centre district as the premier shopping hub.”

In 2009, shopping revenue amounted to RM15.1 billion (US$4.7 billion) of the total tourist receipts of RM53.4 billion.

Iran Air likely to expand Thailand services
Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-23)

IRAN Air is considering the possibility of an additional flight to Phuket from October.

The airline currently operates a twice-weekly service between Tehran and Bangkok, using Boeing B747 with about 300 seats.

Sunanta Wuthisakul, managing director of Iran Air's Thailand GSA, Synergy Aviation, said the current service enjoyed a year-round average load factor of 80 per cent in the past two years.

She said the third weekly flight would spur market growth, and directing the service to Phuket would help ease the difficulty in securing connecting domestic flights during the high season.

Apart from Iran Air, Tehran-based private airline Mahan Air also operates six flights a week between Bangkok and Tehran, using another B747 aircraft model.

The two services were launched on July 20 and July 15 respectively.

AirAsia’s foray into Myanmar completes the carrier's ASEAN network.

AirAsia regional head of commercial Kathleen Tan said the Malaysian capital was being used as a hub to offer affordable air travel to passengers from Europe, China, India, Australia and ASEAN. She believed Myanmar would see a big boost in tourist arrivals with the new flight from Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, said the second Bangkok-Yangon service was launched because of the healthy load factor of 80 to 85 per cent on the initial daily service.

Teng outlines plan to double revenues
Raini Hamdi, Singapore (2010-07-22)

INDEPENDENT luxury hotel grouping Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) has boldly promised its members a doubling of revenue to US$1 billion by 2013, from an expected US$553 million this year - without any corresponding increase of hotels to the portfolio.

There are 449 members now, after 23 new additions last year and 45 terminations.

President and CEO Ted Teng, who is putting his mark on LHW since joining in September 2008, said he "would rather double the revenue than double the hotels", declaring "we're not a pipeline company".

Integral to the US$1 billion business goal is encouraging its highest-spending guests to keep splashing at LHW hotels. Since January 1, Leaders Club members, of which there are around 100,000, can redeem one free night at any LHW hotel if they stay five nights anywhere with the portfolio, and regardless of the amount spent. Teng gained the 100 per cent participation by members by having LHW fund the redemption, not the hotels.

Also integral to his goal are travel agents, whose contribution has risen for LHW.

Tour operators oppose levy on Singaporeans for Johor entry
Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-22)

INBOUND tour operators slammed Johor state assemblyman Osman Sapian's recent suggestion that Singaporean tourists be charged a RM10 (US$3.11) levy when they enter Johor.

Ping Anchorage Travel & Tours CEO, Alex Lee, said: "It is not true that daytrippers spend only on bottled water when they enter Johor. They would spend at least four hours in the state, have a meal there and purchase local products."

Osman had described Singaporean daytrippers as "mineral water tourists" as this was their only purchase. A local daily, The Star, quoted him as saying: "There is no benefit for locals as the tour agents are Singaporeans and the buses are also from the Island Republic."

Grace Holidays general manager, Godwin Miranda, said: "A levy would result in even less Singaporeans visiting Johor. As it is, fewer Europeans come to Malaysia compared to previous years. Chinese and Indian tourists to Malaysia also pass through Johor on their way to Singapore."

Both agents believed state tourism authorities should do more to tap and market Johor's natural attractions such as its islands, orchards and farms. Lee said: "It should also look at developing special products to entice more Singaporean visitors to the state."

ATTA to stimulate demand through marketing initiatives
Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-22)

THE ASSOCIATION of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) will launch marketing activities to spur the current "stagnant" market and win government support.

ATTA president Surapol Sritakul said the aim was to "drive ATTA into a more active mode" and to establish favourable grounds when seeking government aid. This move was also in response to the Cabinet's rejection of the much-needed five billion baht (US$154.78 million) loan sought in the aftermath of the recent Thai political crisis.

He added that although arrival numbers had been improving since mid-June and would likely grow by 10 to 20 per cent for the rest of the year if the Thai political climate remained calm, a further 20 to 30 per cent growth could be achieved through aggressive marketing.

ATTA registrar Sawat Napol has been appointed marketing chairman to spearhead activities, slated to begin in the next few months. Works are to be carried out either solo or in tandem with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

ATTA is estimated to handle around three million of the 14 million tourists the TAT expects this year.

Thai arrivals back in the black
Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-21)

ARRIVALS are in the black in the first half of the year for the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), thanks to a strong first quarter.

And igniting hopes of a recovery, arrivals took a favourable turn between July 1 and 19, an increase of 14.46 per cent to 77,555 visitors, compared to the same period last year.

However, ATTA members are still far from "recovered", notes the association's president Surapol Sritrakul, who said the government had yet to approved the much-needed five billion baht (US$154 million) loan sought to keep tourism-related businesses afloat.

ATTA members received 1.08 million arrivals from January 1 to July 19, a 26 per cent increase year-on-year.

The growth was attributed to a surge in arrivals during the first three months, as Thailand emerged from last year's crises. January's arrivals rose 77.86 per cent year-on-year, while figures for February and March climbed 77.72 and 26.41 per cent respectively.

But as the political riots whipped through Bangkok in April, lasting almost three months, ATTA's arrivals took a dive subsequently, falling 9.88 per cent in April, 31 per cent in May and 18.26 per cent in June.

Mimi Hudoyo, Jakarta (2010-07-20)

Porwanto will join Rajawali Corporation, an Indonesian holding company of diverse industries including resource, property and transportation.

China slaps travel advisory on Hong Kong

Prudence Lui, Hong Kong (2010-07-19)

CHINA yesterday issued a travel warning on Hong Kong, in reaction to a video clip that showed a Hong Kong female tour guide threatening to lock a group of Chinese tourists out of their rooms unless they spend more on shopping.

The incriminating video was recorded by a traveller who joined a tour organised by Golden Win Travel Company last April.

The incident sparked public outrage and triggered an emergency meeting by the Hong Kong travel trade last Saturday. More than 100 representatives of agencies, tour guide unions and shops – members of the Travel Industry Council – converged to discuss remedies.

Golden Win Travel has since blacklisted the female guide.

The latest Hong Kong tourism boo-boo followed the case of a 65-year-old man from Hunan Province who suffered a fatal heart attack in May after arguing with a tour guide in Hong Kong over being forced to shop.

Tour guide groupings such as Hong Kong Tour Guides General Union said 90 per cent
of 1,300 guides for mainland tours survived on commission, without any basic salary. This was believed to be the cause of the problem.

Furthermore, guides were often required to pay in advance for miscellaneous costs, such as wages of coach drivers.

Russian group buys Thai agency

Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-16)

RUSSIAN hospitality group PGS International has acquired a majority share in Thai-based T Traveller2000, following the group's establishment of PGS Hotel subsidiary in January.

Now rebranded as Pegas Touristik, the agency's Bangkok-based general manager Kubilay Atac told TTG Asia e-Daily the move reflected the group's commitment towards Thailand. There was an unprecedented growth in Russian passengers since Pegas entered the market in the 2005/2006 high season, he said.

He added that Pegas chose to invest in T Traveller2000 instead of establishing a new company due to the long-term partnership between the two and its trust in the Thai partner's resources and operations.

T Traveller2000 was groundhandler for Pegas for five years.

PGS also owns Moscow-based Nordwind Airlines, which operates regular charter services from Russia to European and Asian destinations, including Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand.

Indonesia trails in arrivals target

Jakarta (2010-07-16)

TOURIST arrivals to Indonesia between January and May grew 14 per cent to hit 2.77 million visitors, compared to 2.41 million visitors in the same period last year.

Results are, however, still far behind the destination's target of seven million arrivals.

Further, travellers’ length of stay had fallen 11.62 per cent, from 3.04 days last year to 2.66 days, due to a higher percentage of regional travellers. Asian travellers typically spend an average of three to four days compared to long-haul travellers' 10-day stays.

Despite the results, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is optimistic that the seven million arrival target will be met.

Director general of marketing Sapta Nirwandar said: “We are still optimistic (because) an upsurge (in arrivals is expected) between July and August, and during the year-end.”

The ministry will continue to establish a strong presence in key markets, especially in Europe, with the appointment of a Visit Indonesia Tourism Official (VITO) in the Netherlands. It will also increase the frequency of direct promotions in key markets.

CAPA forecasted that airlines worldwide would generate US$58 billion in ancillaries this year, or 12 per cent of airlines’ global revenue.

Thomas Chong, managing director of Holiday Tours & Travel in Malaysia said (Abacus') new system would allow the agency to broaden its offerings to travellers.

‘Mystery’ buyer continues agency acquisitions

Karen Yue, Singapore (2010-07-15)

SINGAPORE’s JP International has been snapped up by the same group of multinational investors that bought SingExpress Travel in February 2009, Safe2Travel in October 2009, two travel agencies in Australia, one in Macau and over 30 in China.

The identity of the investors remains anonymous but they have appointed SingExpress Travel CEO, Steve Fung, to head the acquisition of more agencies across Asia-Pacific, with plans to rebrand all these agencies under one name by the end of the year.

TTG Asia eDaily understands many of the investors are based in Hong Kong. They are individuals with deep pockets but without any experience in the travel trade. In an exclusive interview, Fung would not reveal their identity or provide more information on them.

But he said the scale of acquisition would be “the biggest ever in the industry” and let on that he was working on a major acquisition in Hong Kong and a possible fourth in Singapore. He will announce acquisitions in Japan and Malaysia by end of this year, and is already in talks with potential agencies in South Korea and Taiwan.

Brunei a pot of gold for LCCs

S Puvaneswary, Bandar Seri Begawan (2010-07-15)

AIR access to Brunei will improve with a new Cebu Pacific service from Manila and additional frequency on AirAsia's flights from Kuala Lumpur.

Cebu Pacific will start twice-weekly flights between Manila and Bandar Seri Begawan on August 21, while AirAsia will increase its daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to twice daily from August 25.

The move by these low-cost carriers will boost the leisure, meetings and incentives markets, believes Anthony Chieng, managing director of Sunshine Borneo Tours and Travel. It would help companies save money on flights, enabling them to spend more on the ground, he added.

Leveraging on the improved air links from Malaysia and the Philippines, Chieng will do more marketing in these markets to promote leadership and teambuilding programmes  in Brunei.

Fellow inbound operator in Brunei, Travelhub managing director, Adam Tan, said the destination needed more budget hotels to cater to the growing segment of budget travellers to Brunei.

Banyan Tree Samui to fill rooms with price tactic

Sirima Eamtako, Bangkok (2010-07-15)

BANYAN Tree Samui is entering the market with a price-based strategy aimed at achieving 60 per cent occupancy in its first six months of operation.

Opened on July 1, the resort is offering a minimum two-night stay with breakfast from 21,610 baht (US$670) nett per night until September 30, as well as a spending credit of at least 18,200 baht nett for use within the resort.

General manager Fredrick Arul said the tactic was devised to entice the market and to compete with rival resorts Six Senses Hideaway, Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui and W Retreat (opening November 1).

Arul singled out the Four Seasons as main rival.

Developed by Thailand’s real estate developer TCC Land, the resort features 78 pool villas, each with a private pool measuring 35sqm, the largest on Koh Samui. It also houses the island’s first hydrotherapy spa, The Rainforest.

The resort is located on a private hill cove near Lamai Beach, a 30-minute drive from the airport.

VOA a boon for Myanmar

Rahul Khanna, Yangon (2010-07-15)

Close to 4,500 foreign visitors have been granted visa-on-arrival (VOA) in the first two months since May 1 when the system was launched at Yangon and Mandalay international airports.

Myanmar Marketing Committee chairman Aung Myat Kyaw said the benefits from the VOA were “huge”  for the tourism industry.

He said: “This is a breakthrough for the industry. Although it is still at an early stage, (we think the VOA) will result in a tremendous increase in tourist arrivals in the near future.”

Previously, visas must be arranged in advance before arrival; now it is issued within minutes.

It is also an improvement over the former arrangement that issued VOAs only to travellers booked on tours with a local travel agency.

Matsumoto wants Singapore MICE

Karen Yue, Singapore, reporting for TTGmice (2010-07-15)

MATSUMOTO Tourism & Convention Association aims to grow MICE arrivals from Singapore, encouraged by the growing Singapore leisure arrivals into Japan in recent years.

Saburo Ako, secretary-general of the association, which acts as the convention and visitor bureau for the city in Nagano Prefecture, said the city received more corporate meetings than incentives from its top overseas markets Taiwan, South Korea and China. A lack of awareness of the destination for incentives was the reason.

He said the city’s strong appeal among holidaymakers – it is famed for the Matsumoto Castle, well-preserved heritage and old houses, and the Saito Kinen music festival –indicated its potential to grow incentive arrivals.

The association held its first roadshow for the Singapore travel trade on Tuesday.

Malaysia opens doors to foreign tourist guides

S Puvaneswary, Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-14

MALAYSIA will allow foreign tourist guides from South Korea, Japan, Russia and Iran to operate in the country from October.

The move aims at easing an acute shortage of guides conversant in the languages. The Tourism Ministry believes it could also attract more tourists from the four markets.

Local guides and coach operators are worried about the impact but tourism minister Dr Ng Yen Yen at a press conference yesterday countered: “If local guides do not upgrade themselves, they must face competition from outside. It is that simple!”

She said the ministry would trial this for a year before deciding whether or not to continue.

According to the ministry, there are currently 17 Russian-speaking tourist guides, 29 Korean-speaking guides and fewer than 50 Iranian tour guides and Japanese tour guides. In total, there are about 6,000 licensed tourist guides in the country.

It’s a go: MATTA prerequisite no longer needed

S Puvaneswary, Kuala Lumpur (2010-07-14)

MALAYSIA’s tourism ministry will proceed with plans to make it non-compulsory for agents to become a member of the Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents before they get their licence to operate or their licence renewed.

The new rule will be implemented on November 1. Tourism minister Dr Ng Yen Yen said it was in recognition of the maturity of the local travel industry.
She said: “It is also to allow more competition among associations to serve the needs of their respective members.” The ministry will work with MATTA to ensure a smooth transition.

MATTA’s secretary-general, Joseph Xavier, is confident the new policy will make the association stronger as members will voluntarily join the association they believe in.

Prudence Lui, Hong Kong (2010-07-12)

CHINA Travel Services (CTS) Hong Kong has set up a cruise department in the lead up to the opening of the new cruise terminal at Kai Tak in 2013 which operators believe will herald fresh growth in cruising in the SAR.

Li Hoi Tung, who headed the group’s business travel and MICE arm, helms the new department.

Li said: “Though CTS is a latecomer in the cruise segment, we hope to (grow this business through staff training). We plan to explore new cruise products step by step for our Mango website and (brick-and-mortar) branches.”

He added that many agents had ventured aggressively into the cruise business.

“However, for now, it is still a small segment and the manpower in the market is not
well trained. Selling cruises requires a completely different skills set and expertise. The product is like a floating hotel involving accommodation, tours in different ports and even a MICE element,” Li said.

CTS will invite industry experts to train frontline staff and make good use of Travel Industry Council's cruise-related courses.

Hotels keep F1 season room rates reasonable

Karen Yue, Singapore (2010-07-09)

SOME hotels in Singapore have chosen to maintain or reduce room rates over the coming F1 race season in September, despite a healthier economy this year.

Pacific Arena senior manager for inbound Sharifah Juffry said many hotels, especially non-trackside properties, have reduced rates by 10 per cent over last year to encourage more race fans to book.

Carlton Hotel Singapore resident manager Tracy Ng said: “We are maintaining rates of our existing wing because booking lead time is still not as far out we hope it to be. Our early-bird promotions that expire end of July have so far earned us some corporate bookings for the race days.”

However, guestrooms in the hotel's new wing are priced higher at S$750 (US$544) to $800++ per night, with a minimum booking of three nights, because “the product is more premium”.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, which performed well for the 2009 race despite the economic woes, has also chosen to maintain its room rates at S$1,870++ per night, with a minimum booking of three nights.

A spokesperson of the luxury hotel told TTG Asia e-Daily that bookings now are on par with last year, with several corporate groups confirmed for the race days.
